The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) was founded in Omaha, Nebraska in 1894 as the "Daughters of Erin". The Organization pledged itself to God and Country. The Preamble of our Constitution states that the intent and purpose of the Ladies is to promote Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity among its members; assisting the people of Ireland to establish an Irish Republic which shall include the 32 counties of Ireland, aiding the aged, sick, blind and infirm members and for the legitimate expense of the Ladies, including Missions work and Catholic Action. The Ladies also foster the ideals and perpetuate the history and traditions of the Irish people and promote Irish culture. Our Patron Saint is Saint Brigid of Ireland.

The Charlotte Division was started in 1998 when 15 women came together at St. John Neuman's Parish and decided to start the first division in North Carolina.  We have since added Greensboro, Wilmington and Raleigh. Our women are devoted to their Roman Catholic Faith and their Irish-American heritage. We celebrate the Feast Days of St. Brigid and St. Patrick.  St. Brigid's Division invites you to browse our site and sign our guest book. May good St. Patrick and St. Brigid bless you and keep you.
What is the LAOH?

The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) was founded in Omaha, Nebraska in 1894 as the "Daughters of Erin". The Organization pledged itself to God and Country. The Charlotte Division was started in 1998 when 15 women came together at St. John Neuman's Parish and decided to start the first division in North Carolina.  We have since added Greensboro, Wilmington and Raleigh.

How do I join the LAOH?

1) You must be a practicing Roman Catholic woman.
2) You must be Irish by birth, descent, or by legal adoption; or you may the wife or mother      of a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America, Inc.;  or you may be the             mother of a Junior Division member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.

When does the Charlotte Division of the LAOH meet?

We usually meet the third Wednesday of every month at 7:30pm.  Please contact us at Saint_brigid@msn.com or call 704 554 0720 for more information.

What do the Charlotte members of the LAOH do?

1.The Charlotte Division participates in the uptown Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on            the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day.

2.We host an annual Irish night each year with raffles, Irish dancing and entertainment.

3.We donate money to Irish and Catholic based organizations both in Charlotte and                through our National Organization's charities, including Project St. Patrick which                 helps seminarians with their finances, SOARS - provides funds for medical equipment          for our aging religious, and the Columban Missionaries.

4.We volunteer within our own parishes and as a group with several charitable                        organizations in Charlotte, including donations of items needed by Catherine's House          in Belmont, NC, which is a refuge for single mothers with children. This home is run             by the Mercy Sisters of Belmont.  The Sisters of Mercy were started in Dublin, Ireland.

5.We promote the Annual Irish History Essay Scholarship sponsored by the National               LAOH. In 2004, we were happy to have a winner from our own Charlotte Catholic High          School.

6.We have purchased a perpetual trophy to be given each year when the Walsh- Kelley           School of Irish Dance puts on a Feis where some of the best Irish dancers compete.

7.We join together with the men in the Sons of Erin Division of the Ancient Order of                Hibernians for their annual summer family picnic.

8.We celebrate the Feast of St. Brigid (February 1) by having a special Mass and                     luncheon.

9.We celebrate St. Patrick's Day by dining out as a group, giving us a chance to                      socialize with each other.

10.We have a Christmas Social each year and install our new officers during a beautiful           ceremony.
